Why Danish Open Sandwiches?

Who doesn’t love good pub food in Shrewsbury? At the Mytton Arms, we do things a little differently, and offer freshly made danish open sandwiches (which are available on pre order). But why have we chosen this as our flagship dish?

Danish open sandwiches, known as smørrebrød, are a staple of Danish life. They can be found in every lunch box at school, at every office lunch, on every kitchen counter and on display at every lunchtime eatery across the country. An open sandwich is built upon a slice of rye bread, which is close to every Dane’s heart, from the time they move to solid foods to their first day at school, to the canteen at work to family lunches at the summerhouse, rye bread is an essential component and is much loved. The open sandwich is then constructed by adding layers, known as pålæg, which consists of various cooked and cured meat and fish and then adorned with salad and vegetable garnishes and topped off with a dressing.

When done well, a Danish Open Sandwich is a work of art, and here at The Mytton we are thrilled to bring them to our patrons, such that you too can fall in love with them, much as I did, having lived in Denmark for 20 years and having eaten my fair share over those years. So for a different take on good pub food in Shrewsbury, come on down to the Mytton Arms! Velbekomme!
